Oral History Project with Former Refugees
"A Celebration of Voice: Through Their Stories, We Learn"
Recording the oral histories of former refugees
The students in the Holocaust and Genocide Studies class interview former refugees residing in Lexington and Central Kentucky as part of an outreach project. Our goals for the project include:
-
Preserve the oral histories of former refugees living in Lexington, Kentucky.
-
Teach students how to conduct oral history interviews.
-
Improve student interpersonal skills and writing skills through the interview and transcription process.
-
Create student awareness of the individual lives that are affected by atrocities such as genocide, persecution, and war.
-
Build empathy in the community for the experiences that refugees face in their countries of birth as well as their new country of residence.
-
Enable other educators to teach about refugee experiences by providing a website with access to interview recordings, transcripts, and ideas for lesson implementation.
