School History
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education." — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Built on Belief and Second Chances
Martin Luther King Jr. Academy for Excellence (MLK) provides Fayette County middle and high school students with an alternative educational setting tailored to their academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. Grounded in empathy, structure, and high expectations, MLK offers a safe environment for students to overcome barriers, regain confidence, and stay on track toward graduation.
How We Support Our Students
- Flexible Learning: Programs like night school and flexible credit recovery help students balance jobs and personal responsibilities while earning their diploma.
- Whole-Person Care: Dedicated social workers, counselors, and behavioral specialists work alongside teachers daily to offer continuous personal support.
- Small Class Sizes: A 6:1 student-to-staff ratio allows educators to provide individualized instruction and build strong, meaningful connections.
Seeing the Difference
Recognized nationally by the National Dropout Prevention Network, MLK Academy’s true impact shows in our students' success—whether they are transitioning back to their home schools or walking across the stage at graduation ready for college, trades, or the workforce. Guided by Dr. King’s vision, we give every student the support and tools to write their own story.
